EXHIBITS TECHNICIAN I

The Exhibits Technician I is primarily responsible for the maintenance and repair of hands-on exhibits at Boston Children’s Museum to ensure a safe, functional, and fun environment for children and families.

Reporting to the Exhibits Operations Manager, the Exhibits Technician I position is a full-time, year-round role with a consistent 5 day work week (including one weekend day) and benefits. This is an ideal position for creative problem-solvers with practical experience in working with a variety of tools and materials, who love to fix, tinker, and create things of all sorts.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular inspections and test exhibits to determine repair needs; prioritize repairs both independently and in collaboration with the Exhibits and Visitor Experience Teams
  • Maintain and repair exhibits, including electrical and mechanical (motors, pumps, filters, pulleys, etc.), and AV and computer technologies used in exhibits; choose the safest and most effective repair methods
  • Participate in Museum daily opening, and check exhibits to ensure optimal functionality for daily visitor use
  • Clean designated exhibit components, including regular daily service of water play areas
  • Maintain safe and organized shared spaces, including work spaces and storage areas
  • Maintain exhibit repair documents and log work completed; communicate project progress and needs with manager and other team members
  • Assist with installation and de-installation of exhibits and exhibit components and refreshing of exhibit spaces, including demolition, space preparation, and painting, as needed
  • Assist Exhibit Team in the development of improvements to exhibits and new permanent exhibits, including creating prototypes and/or small components for exhibits, as needed
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues from the Exhibits Team as well as other teams, such as Visitor Experience, Facilities, and Housekeeping
  • Interact with the Museum visitors in the course of normal duties, including fielding visitor questions
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • On-the-job experience in repair/maintenance positions; construction or fabrication-related industries; theatre, film, or other hands-on, creative industries required
  • 2-5 years experience with shop equipment, carpentry, hand tools, woodworking, plumbing, 3D fabrication, and/or electronics required; audio/visual knowledge and troubleshooting skills preferred
  • Experience with a diverse array of construction, fabrication, and crafting materials and hardware preferred
  • Skills in areas like AV production, pool/aquarium maintenance, heavy duty sewing/upholstery, automation and simple programing (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, sensors, etc.) may be useful
  • Ability to prioritize and organize tasks, and complete tasks within assigned timeframes
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and be part of a team
  • Ability to communicate with team members
  • Ability to work safely in shop spaces and in exhibits when visitors are present
  • Comfort working with and around children in a busy, family-friendly environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google suite required; proficiency with AutoCAD, Sketchup, or other drafting software preferred
Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Frequently walking, climbing stairs, squatting, pulling, pushing, reaching, and lifting, occasionally climbing ladders, have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, have the ability to work in tight or cramped spaces and required to and required to use necessary PPE as deemed appropriate or as mandated by industry safety standards (i.e., OSHA).

Work Environment: Normal office environment with exposure to typical office equipment and supplies. i.e., desktop computer, multi-line phone, fax, printer, and shredder, in addition to the use of/exposure to shop equipment and tools. Required to work in a production and maintenance environment containing sawdust, paints, solvents, pool treatment chemicals, and other typical hazards found in similar environments. The office/shop is a shared space. Working in the Museum exhibits can occasionally be loud, noisy, and crowded during peak seasons. Some exhibits spaces can present exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and moisture.

Other Factors: A regular work schedule, 8 hour day shifts, 40hrs/wk (including 1 weekend day). Required to carry 2‐way radio and tool pouch while on duty. Required to adhere to dress code, including wearing a uniform hat and/or vest provided by the Museum. Required to wear appropriate PPE provided by the Museum, including safety-toed shoes, as needed. The position may require overtime hours dependent on emergency situations, project work, etc. All overtime must be approved in advance by the manager.
